Kalimantan or Borneo is my childhood dream. Kalimantan so fascinating for me. If I ever have a dream to go to Anambas Islands for 7 years. Kalimantan, I’ve dreamed it when I was elementary school. I do not know what attracted me to the island. Maybe because I am a Sumatran and also we have a large forest. So, I hope to see the forest more dense than in my region. I was not struck by a multistory building or the bustle of the city, but I was fascinated by the dense forest or the countryside.
People say if we’ve been to Kalimantan, then we will come back to the Island someday. And all of my friends and I had been to Kalimantan, finally we come back to this island for different reasons. I’ve been to Palangkaraya – Central Kalimantan few months before the trip begins. I had a job there. At that time, I was very happy but I did not have time to look at the region more closely. And now, I come back again to Kalimantan. I will start my trip with my friend.
Our trip started from Tjilik Riwut airport in Palangkaraya and continued to rent a car to our destination in Sampit and Pangkalan Bun. Palangka Raya is the capital of Central Kalimantan, the city is located between The Kahayan River and Sebangau Rivers. The first our President, Sukarno, initiated construction of the city of Palangka Raya as new capital of Indonesia to replace Jakarta. A proposal that was discussed until recently but we do not know when it comes true.
I do not know much about this city, but I am very interested in Fringe tour of Kahayan River. As I know, we must search correct schedule if we want to follow this tour. If we want to follow the regular tour, 20 passengers with a Kelotok boat, we need about 3-4 hours at a cost of about 75 thousand rupiah. Beside that, if we joined a tour with 8-9 passengers we have to pay 250 thousand rupiah. And if you have much money, we can joined a tour with a large ship. The cost involved between 10 million to 15 million by the time duration of approximately 24 hours. We’ll get some support facilities at the big ship; bed, bathroom, Restaurant, and others. I really hope someday to join this tour. Because when we joined the tour, we will be able to see people’s lives on Kahayan riverside; community life, forests, orang utans habitats, and traditional gold mining.
Beside Kahayan tour, we can see Orang Utan school at Nyaru Menteng. My friend, Mba Rina, had ever explore these places and can be seen on her blog; https://jadidhayataka.wordpress.com/2017/01/04/borneo-kenangan-berdua-si-boi/ She told us about Palangka raya and BOS- Nyaru Menteng. If you know about Subud or Susila Budhi Dharma Organization, you will find Subud Area. I have been there and looked at the are. It is interesting area. Besides all of them, we will know that Palangkaraya has many nature tourisms and they are so fascinating.
After we were in Palangkaraya, we continued our trip to Sampit. From Palangkaraya to Sampit need more les 4-5 hours via land transport. What do you think about Sampit? Sampit is the capital of East Kotawaringin in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Sampit is one of the oldest settlements in East Kotawaringin. Sampit is a charming city. Unfortunately, we could not explore this city because we did not have much time. We only had time to eat fish cuisines at one of the restaurants in riverside of Mentaya River. The food is so delicious. Moreover, along the way we’ve been through by seeing the extent of oil palm plantations. Looked less attractive but that’s the situation now. We took photos in a few of places that we visited. Oh I forget, we also saw the cemetery where was buried Sampit riot victims. There are only ordinary signpost that reads about the graves. However, according to our driver, it is Sampit riot victims cemetery.
After 4-5 hours, we arrived in Pangkalan Bun. Do you know about the city? Pangkalan Bun is the capital city of West Kotawaringin Regency. Pangkalan bun became famous because of the crash of Air Asia plane. However, not because it Pangkalan Bun became famous. In Pangkalan Bun is the gateway to the Tanjung Puting National Park. Places for Borneo Orang Utan habitat and efforts to protect it.
Similarly, in the city of Sampit, we have not been able to explore the place. At that time, we just focus on our next trip to Tanjung Puting National Park. The draw of Pangkalan Bun is the city is more crowded than the city of Sampit. We also easier to go, from Jakarta, to Pangkalan Bun via air or Ships in the port of Kumai.
There is one an interesting thing when we were there. We had lunch in the middle of the oil palm plantations. Cuisine menu is not typical Pangkalan Bun cuisines, but the Javanese food. In Pangkalan Bun, also the others Central Kalimantan regions ,there are many locations for Transmigration Program. It is come from Javanese. So, we do not be surprised if we can find a lot of Javanese people there. At the food stall, We tried to eat rice corn, Tiwul, pecel, and spicy chicken curry. It was very Delicious and spicy! Pangkalan Bun interesting to visit again someday. Hopefully!
